NLC Provides Cutting-Edge Executive Education

In addition to our workshops, conference attendees can add any of our NLC University (NLCU) leadership development courses to their registration for a nominal fee. NLCU courses offer local elected leaders and municipal staff the learning opportunities to positively impact governance and innovation in communities of every size.

When: Wednesday, November 18 (City Summit pre-conference)

Courses are offered on Wednesday, November 18 between 9 AM to 4 PM and are available for single purchase ($200) or two courses for $350 (Save $50!). Attendees can earn three credits per course.  

The courses cover a range of topics, including budgeting, strategic planning, and communications – all critical skills for any local elected leader and their staff.

Budgeting and Financial Acumen for Elected Officials |  9 AM – 12 Noon 
Master the pillars of public finance and how to turn community priorities into actionable policy. Govern effectively by understanding financial documents and providing transparent oversight of public resources. 

Strategic Planning for Municipalities  |  9 AM – 12 Noon 
Create a roadmap for your community with actionable and measurable goals. Learn how to prioritize effectively and bring community leaders into the planning process. 

Legal Competency for Municipalities |  9 AM – 12 Noon 
Understand the legal frameworks that shape charters, ethics and open meetings. Develop expertise in procedures, roles, responsibilities, conflict of interest, public transparency and the role of federal-state-local systems. 

Communications Skills for Elected Officials | 1-4 PM 
Active listening, using plain language for messaging are key tools to empathy, respect and understanding, How and when should social media be used. We will study examples and offer practical exercises for learning. 

Leading Through Crisis | 1-4 PM 
Communicating and leading in a crisis. Protect your municipality’s reputation, mitigate risk to people and place by planning and executing. Preparation. Response. Recovery. Our instructors will take you through scenarios and provide hands-on practice. 

Building the Municipal Talent Pipeline | 1-4 PM 
How do you plan for, budget and hire for innovation and business continuity? Learn strategies to support proactive hiring, building regional collaborations and engaging partners.
