Los Angeles, CA
Los Angeles Controller Ron Galperin is the elected watchdog for L.A.’s taxpayers. He oversees a team of more than 160 employees dedicated to conducting independent audits of City departments, managing payroll of City employees, disbursing outside vendor payments, preparing comprehensive reports on the City’s finances, and working to reduce waste and fraud to increase accountability Citywide.
In establishing open data portals, such as CheckbookLA, which offers details on all City spending, along with visualized data sets and reports that offers a deeper understanding of how government works, Controller Galperin has delivered more transparency, deepening the level of trust people have to transform their relationship with government. Under Galperin’s leadership, the Controller’s office has issued audits focused on improving the efficiency and accountability of City government and on delivering quality City services.
Because of these efforts, the What Works Cities initiative of Bloomberg Philanthropies conferred Gold status on Los Angeles for its open data platforms – the highest certification in the United States. In 2015, the U.S. City Open Data Census rated L.A. atop its “Open Data Cities” list.
Galperin brings more than 20 years of experience as a transactional and litigation attorney and small business owner. He received his J.D. from Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and his undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis. He lives in West Los Angeles with his husband, Rabbi Zachary Shapiro.
