Biography

Having served as Vice Chairman of the City Council in 2015 and Chairman in 2016, Kemp currently serves as Chairman of the Government Affairs and Annexation Committee, a member of the Audit, Budget, Parks & Environment, Personnel, Planning & Zoning, and Public Works, Transportation & General Services Committees. Additionally, he is the council liaison to the Pension & Investment Committee and Shelby County School Board. In his role as Chairman of Government Affairs & Annexation, Kemp has led the Council’s efforts to build relations and legislative influence in the State Capitol. Kemp also serves as the Council liaison to the Greater Memphis Chamber, and his super district represents half of the city – more than 300,000 people.

A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Kemp put down roots in Memphis upon graduating in 1996 with a Bachelor’s in History from Rhodes College. In 2002, working his way through business school, he earned his MBA from the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University. Kemp is a Principal at Cushman & Wakefield|Commercial Advisors, LLC, where his Global Portfolio Solutions Team handles the real estate needs of long-term clients with a global footprint of 20 Million Square Feet. Prior to joining the firm, he was the Memphis City Leader for Trammell Crow Co.

Kemp’s passion for the community has led him to serve on the Board of Trustees of the National Civil Rights Museum and the Emerge Memphis Business Incubator. In 2001, at the age of 27, he was named to the Memphis Business Journal’s “Top 40 Under 40” for community and business achievements.

Kemp also served on the Board of Directors of Partners in Public Education. He has also served as the Chairman of the Shelby County Republican Party, where he focused on electing ethical and effective men and women to office while smashing fundraising records and making outreach a key focus of the party.

Kemp, an active member of Second Presbyterian Church, is married to the former Anne McGrew, with whom he has two children.
