San Antonio, Texas
Jonathan Malagon has been involved in social justice and racial equity work for over 20 years. He is an Equity Manager in the City of San Antonio’s Office of Equity, supporting various initiatives to ensure that policy-making, service delivery, community engagement, and distribution of resources promote equitable outcomes. This includes providing technical assistance and trainings for city departments and staff, organizing staff around advancing equity within their departments, development and application of racial equity tools, and facilitating Departmental Equity Assessments. Previously, he supported the City of Richmond, California, in the development of a Health in All Policies (HiAP) Strategy and Ordinance. Through this effort, Richmond became one of the first cities in the nation to adopt a HiAP Strategy.
He previously served as a Senior Associate with PolicyLink, where he coordinated the statewide policy campaigns of the Alliance for Boys and Men of Color, a coalition of community, system, and youth leaders working to remove barriers and improve outcomes for this population. As a result of this effort, California legislature adopted policies that promote safer and healthier schools, decriminalize youth, remove unfair barriers to employment for the formerly incarcerated, and expand health coverage for undocumented Californians.
He is a former high school teacher in Watts and Northeast Los Angeles, where he engaged students in Youth Participatory Action Research (YPAR) projects on access to healthy foods and resulted in the development of school-based community gardens. He holds a MCP and MPH from UC Berkeley, and a MEd from UCLA.
