Catherine L. Lester

Catherine Lester was confirmed as the Director for the City of Seattle’s Human Services Department in 2015.  The Department is one of the largest investors in Seattle’s safety net, investing more than $100 million annually to support Seattle’s most vulnerable neighbors and communities.  The Department’s work includes planning and grant-making to nearly 200 agencies, as well as direct services for youth and families, seniors and those living with a disability.

Prior to joining the City of Seattle, Catherine worked in Ohio and North Carolina in the fields of mental health, juvenile justice, child welfare, family support, and neighborhood revitalization.  Catherine received a Master’s of Science degree in Social Administration from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH and a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work from Ryerson University in Toronto, Canada.  She is also a Children & Families Fellow through the nationally renowned Annie E. Casey Foundation.

Catherine grew up in Toronto, Canada.  As the daughter of two educators, she is committed to working for results and racial equity on behalf of children, families and communities.
