A third generation Memphian, Berlin F. Boyd was appointed to fulfill the remaining District 7 City Council term from the vacancy left by his predecessor, Barbara Swearengen Ware in 2011 and reappointed in 2015 to the same seat vacated by Lee Harris, who was elected to the Tennessee State Senate. Following a successful year as the 2017 Chairman of the Memphis City Council, Boyd was re-elected to a second term as Council Chairman for 2018. Throughout his life, Berlin has demonstrated his commitment to serving others while repeatedly leading through diverse and challenging situations. He has initiated issues around economic development, job creation, housing and education. While on the Council, he was instrumental in voting on several key issues. If you want to know what people believe, don’t read what they write, don’t ask them what they believe, just observe what they do.” His leadership is inspired by his strong belief that a more responsive government, greater citizen participation and empowered communities will improve the quality of life for all. He also strives to define his life with fair, honest and effective leadership.
As a collaborative and entrepreneurial leader, his professional career encompasses; strategic planning, business development, large-scale project management, and executive leadership in government relations and public policy.
