Synopsis

Recycling is one of the most widespread environmental success stories of the last 50 years, and municipal recycling services have been at the center of it all. But as recycling has expanded to become a global industry, flaws in the system have also grown. The industry is fragmented into a confusing web of collection systems, single-stream recycling causes high rates of contamination, and Americans continue to generate more and more waste. The health of our citizens and the safety of our environment depend on sustainable waste management systems, and cities are not alone. This session will explore how local leaders are working with haulers, processors, corporate partners, and many other experts to Rethink Recycling and pursue even more ambitious zero waste goals.
