Synopsis

The Poulsbo Police Department responds frequently to calls involving mental illness and substance use disorders. Poulsbo is a small city–population 11,000–and its officers do not have access to community health partners or a specialized behavioral unit. This panel is about Poulsbo’s innovative approach to this situation. The City has established a police navigator program that partners police with behavioral health specialists in four cities. Navigators respond, with police, to calls involving behavioral health issues, and they work to connect people to services after receiving police referrals. Participating departments share responsibility for the program as well as program costs. This multi-city approach is economical and effective.
