Synopsis

Skateboarding has played a pivotal role in shaping the re-emergence of urban life in cities across the country. Skateboarders are artists, thinkers and entrepreneurs who were pioneers in occupying urban centers and helping cities come back. In 2012, Philadelphia debuted Paines Park, a public space for skateboarding along the banks of the Schuylkill River steps from the famed Philadelphia Museum of Art. The session will help people visualize how skateboarding can be a catalyst for youth engagement and development communities and present data analysis and information to help cities plan appropriately for skateboarding. The New York Times and others have recently reported on skateboarding’s shift to the main stream, including its inclusion in the 2020 Olympics.
