Synopsis

New research suggests that our listening styles are situational, that we can and do change them depending on our goals for various situations. Each style fills an important need in human communication: building relationships, gathering information for decision-making, carrying out tasks, and evaluating messages. Thus, we should develop our abilities to identify the style that is most appropriate for a given situation, build our strengths in using each style, and learn to move fluidly between them. By understanding our personal listening style(s) and tendencies, we can become better listeners in many different types of situations.

In this training, you’ll learn about empathic and active listening tools as well as how to gain deep insights through observation. We’ll help you better identify and understand the people impacted by your decisions, and how to dig deeper to unearth hidden assumptions.

Learning Objectives

  • Assess your personal listening style and how you might shift your listening style to effectively meet the needs of various audiences and situations
  • Learn and practice techniques for active listening, empathic listening, and nonviolent communication
  • Apply listening techniques to a change management context
  • Learn ways to observe your users to gain deeper empathy
