NLC City Summit

Synopsis

Civic engagement is crucial for building resilient communities, especially during these times of rapid change and increasing expectations of local government and leadership. Future civic engagement will include online opportunities that not only inform residents about important local issues but also allow decision-makers to engage with their communities in an authentic dialogue, together helping to guide and strengthen communities. Attendees will leave this workshop with the knowledge and confidence to build and manage a comprehensive digital civic engagement strategy in their communities. Starting with a self-assessment of outreach efforts, both online and in-person, attendees will then learn about and discuss the 5 Myths of Civic Engagement and how to maximize the use and benefit of digital engagement as part of an overall engagement strategy. Success stories will be shared by some of the most innovative communities in the country, including how these communities factor the need for broad input, statistically relevant surveys, and ease-of-access digital engagement strategies. Finally, attendees will generate a list of concrete next steps their cities can implement to engage a greater portion of their population while being mindful of staff time and resources.
